ADAPT adds six states to practice matchmaking program

By | November 14, 2019

ADA Practice Transitions, an ADA Business Innovation Group service focused on helping dentists make the process of joining or leaving a practice both predictable and successful, began matching dentists on Nov. 1 in six additional states.

Dentists seeking to join or purchase a practice in Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire, plus owners in those states who are looking to hire an associate or find someone to purchase their practice, can now fill out their ADA Practice Transitions (ADAPT) online profiles to begin the matchmaking process.

The six states join Maine and Wisconsin, the two states that began to pilot the program in April.

“We are expanding earlier than expected because of interest and excitement that has been generated by our arrival into the market,” said Dr. Suzanne Ebert, an ADA advisor for ADA Practice Transitions.

The service matches dentists with practice owners by considering aspects such as philosophy of care, personality traits, location and desired practice characteristics.

“Incoming dentists are thrilled to have the ADA help them to find a practice that they can thrive in. The service is able to expose them to options that they had previously not considered,” Dr. Ebert said. “Owners are happy to have their professional organization beside them as they navigate their transition into retirement or the expansion of their practice through the addition of another dentist.”

ADA Practice Transitions includes an online profile with demographic information, a personality assessment and a detailed section that helps a dentist articulate their philosophy of care — their unique approach to dentistry.

The platform looks at basic filters when pairing potential dentists, including location preferences and whether a person is looking for a purchase or employment situation. As the ADA advisor for the program, Dr. Ebert says she then reviews each profile and makes suggested matches based on a shared philosophy of care. This approach helps ensure long-term success for the dentists and continuity of care for patients.

An ADA advisor is assigned to each participant to help facilitate the process and foster a positive relationship for both parties. The ADA advisor guides participating dentists through each step to ensure they feel confident they are connected with the right dentist.

In addition, ADA Practice Transitions addresses confidentiality concerns of participating dentists. Unlike a typical classified or online posting, ADA Practice Transitions profiles cannot be seen by everyone.

An advisor will show both dentists only the basic profile details, including philosophy of care statements, general location and essential practice information. Identifying information, such as names, photos and work history, are blocked out.

According to ADA Practice Transitions, dentists will never see the profile for a dentist who is not recommended by the advisor.

This prevents other dentists on the platform from learning who is looking for a change.

“The only time contact information is shown is when both doctors agree that they want to talk to each other,” Dr. Ebert said.

The ADA Practice Transitions program was developed after field research uncovered a need in the marketplace for dentists who want to connect for both employment opportunities and to facilitate the transition of a practice from one owner to another.

Research also found additional needs around learning skills related to basic business management, ownership, patient acquisition, purchasing and staff relationships.

The ADA Business Innovation Group unveiled ADA Practice Transitions during the House of Delegates town hall meeting at ADA 2018.

“The beauty of this service is that is gets better and better as more people participate,” said Dr. Joseph P. Crowley, member of the ADA Business Innovation Group Board of Directors and former ADA president. “Adding additional states allows us to serve more dentists and gives us a larger pool to work with in making successful matches.”

Dr. Ebert, Thanks for the information concerning ADAPT. I have a partner in my dental practice which is located in southern Arizona. We are interested in identifying a potential associate who may wish to become a partner, in the right circumstances. I am about to retire, and have been a member of the ADA since 1974. Does your service fit our need? What if the fee range for the service? Other questions may come up in a phone conversation. Please contact me with your responses. Thanks very much.
