New patients. New colleagues. Maybe even a new family. As a new dentist, you’re exposed to different risks compared to your dental student days.

“The ADA member insurance plans underwritten by Great West are one of the best benefits of ADA membership,” said Dr. Lindsey Yates, ADA Council on Members Insurance and Retirement Programs’ New Dentist Committee ex-officio member. “If you’re trying to stay on top of your student loan payments and save up for a house/car/new baby, the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on insurance premiums.”

For most ADA members, risk management begins with a solid foundation of life and disability insurance protection. The ADA Members Insurance Plans, designed exclusively for ADA, provide quality coverage to protect you, your family and your practice at competitive member-only rates.

The member’s portfolio includes the ADA Annually Renewable Term Life Plan, a new Level Term Life Plan, Universal Life, Disability Income Protection, Office Overhead Expense and MedCASH (a supplemental medical plan).

New dentists in particular find value in the ADA Life insurance which can be assigned for bank collateral to refinance student debt or establish a dental practice loan. Life insurance also provides a level of financial security for your loved ones in the event of your premature death.

More specifically, it includes an “own occupation” definition of disability that can replace a dentist’s monthly income all the way to age 67 – even if he/she chooses to work in another area of dentistry or enter a new occupation. The ADA recognizes the financial investment you made in your dental career and the value of protecting against the risk of disability. Don’t wait until it’s too late to create your coverage portfolio.

This is some really good information about disability insurance. It does seem like a good idea to have a professional disability. Especially if you have family who has a disability.

Re: ADA Great West Disability and Office Overhead

Be careful when you purchase disability and office overhead from Great West. After faithfully paying the premiums, on time, for almost 40 years, I became fully disabled. I struggle every day just to survive. When I filed my claim, it took many months for Great West to hire an independent MD. The independent MD twisted my doctor’s words around, twisted my words around and denied my claim. I never thought they would give me this much trouble. It has been nightmare these last several months. Now I have mounting bills with no income to pay them.

I really care about my patients. Over the years, many have become good friends. I signed up for the coverage because I was assured the insurance policy would cover me if I could not work. The policy would enable me to hire a replacement dentist and Great West would cover any of the office bills. It breaks my heart that I cannot physically treat my patients but I thought I was covered. Nope, Great West says I can work even though my doctor there is no way I can. Be aware that even though your doctor may know you better than an insurance company, the insurance company will take the word of their hired MD expert.

I was young once. I was involved with my local dental action meetings. I wish I was involved with getting ADA to help any ADA member whose claims was denied by the ADA sponsored Great West Life. When you are denied, you are all alone. To my knowledge, ADA doesn’t have anyone I can talk to. When you go against a big time insurance company, it isn’t a fair fight.

I will continue posting in hopes that it may help other dentists who are facing similar problems.

    Take care.
