The ADA Board of Trustees announced in August the 2016-17 class of the Institute for Diversity in Leadership, which includes several new dentists.

The class members are Drs. Michelle Aguilos, Houston; Luz Marina Aguirre, New York; Mandeep Alamwala, Everson, Washington; Rhoda-LeAnn Ballentine Norris, Atlanta; Tina Brandon Abbatangelo, Las Vegas; Carolyn Brown, Columbia, South Carolina; Renee Fennell-Dempsey, Philadelphia; Brooke Fukuoka, Jerome, Idaho; Erinne Kennedy, Boston; Mina Kim, New York; Stephanie Mazariegos, Lithia, Florida; Sneha Patel, Yukon, Oklahoma; Shakalpi Pendurkar, San Jose, California; Diana Pothier, Boise, Idaho; Carmen Smith, Dallas; and Yokeca Watts, Birmingham, Alabama.

During their program year, the 16 Institute class members will develop their leadership abilities through faculty seminars and experience designing and leading projects for their dental associations or other community organizations. The 2016-17 students will work with leading educators from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.

“Leadership that represents diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas makes the ADA stronger,” said ADA President Carol Gomez Summerhays. “Fostering diverse leaders in organized dentistry through the Institute is a priority for the ADA, and I’m excited about seeing what this newest class will accomplish in their Institute projects and future leadership roles.”

Since 2003, 177 dentists have been enrolled in the program. Institute alumni have since served as volunteer leaders at the local, state and national levels of the ADA, and other dental associations and service organizations.

The ADA Institute for Diversity in Leadership is made possible through the generous support of Henry Schein, Inc. and Procter & Gamble.
