Don’t forget to give kudos this week to the dental assistants in your offices for helping make your practice successful.

This year’s theme is “Dental Assistants: Our Mission is to Serve, Our Passion is to Care.”

“Dental assistants are the heart and the backbone of every successful dental practice,” said Dr. Andrew B. Brown, chair of the ADA Council on Dental Practice. “Patients trust them, listen to what they say and depend on them to offer reassurance and reliable information. The dentist and the rest of the team look to them to keep everything running smoothly.”

Many dental assistants will observe the week by participating in educational and charity events and other team activities. Dentists often show their gratitude for dental assistants’  diverse contributions to the practice and the public by providing perks such as luncheons, flowers or treats.

“In my practice, we encourage our dental assistants to take ongoing training and we make a conscious effort to keep them actively engaged in everything that’s going on,” Dr. Brown said. “This level of involvement and interaction has a positive impact on both our patients and our staff.”

Each year, the American Dental Assistants Association urges dental assistants to recap their activities and successes throughout the year and submit them for possible publication in The Dental Assistant, the ADAA journal.

Dental team members can download a kit that includes ideas for a news release; an overview on using social media to promote DARW online; sample proclamations and public service announcements; and in-house promotions. It also includes examples of how last year’s participants celebrated the week.

Dental Assistants Recognition Week is sponsored by the ADA, the ADAA, the Canadian Dental Association and the Canadian Dental Assistants Association. For more information on the ADAA or to download the kit, visit dentalassistant.org and click on DARW on the left side of the page.
