Mountain City, Tenn. — Dr. Rachel Hymes took the continuing education course Sports Dentistry: Trauma Treatment and Prevention at ADA 2014 — America’s Dental Meeting in San Antonio last October.

She was happy she did.

“As soon as I went back to my practice a child came in with a traumatic injury after football,” said Dr. Hymes, a New Dentist Committee member. “It helped me to be more comfortable treating this patient. This course about sports and trauma in particular gave tips to help treat many different types of sports trauma and what to be aware of. I was so thankful for this course.”

Dr. Hymes graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine in 2010. In the past year she has treated many patients with sports injuries, from basketball to all-terrain vehicle riding — and even one young patient who injured his teeth when trying to lasso a cow.

Dr. Hymes practices at the Mountain City Medical Center in rural Tennessee.

Sports Dentistry is not the only course that Dr. Hymes took at ADA 2014 in which she uses the training she received. She also went to Oral Health and Dental Management for the Pregnant Patient because she treats many pregnant women in the low-income area. “We educate them on dental hygiene,” she said. “We also tell them not to let their children go to bed with their bottles. So much of what we do is education.”

Dr. Hymes has been attending annual meetings since she has been a practicing dentist and tailors her CE registration to questions she gets from her patients. This year, for example, she hopes to register for courses that touch on sleep disorders and grinding, since patients have been asking her for guidance on those issues.

At ADA 2015 — America’s Dental Meeting Nov. 5-10 in Washington, D.C., Dr. Hymes plans on taking as many courses as she did last year — seven — but she also looks forward to other aspects of the annual meeting. “I enjoy networking and being surrounded by people who are as passionate about dentistry as I am,” she said.

annual meetingEach year, Dr. Hymes reunites with friends — all new dentists — from around the country who hang out together throughout the annual meeting. “Another perk of attending the conference is getting to see my friends who are scattered around the country and meeting new ones,” she said.

Registration for ADA 2015 is open online at ADA.org/meeting. Registration fees and CE course fees increase after Oct. 9.
